An Old Man and His Memories - Start Reading Here
Episode list and other helpful pointers for readers
An Old Man and His Memories is a novella originally published on Substack in parts, beginning in January, 2025. It is a sequel to the previous novellas, Song of the Amorous Frogs: A Paris Story of the 1920s and Left Bank on the Bayou: A Queer Houston Story of the 1930s – also published as Substack serials, in 2023/24. Together they form a collective work of historical fiction I’m tentatively titling Looking Back at a Long Queer Life.
The main character of all three is Narrator, a man who is discovering his queerness and learning to live as a confident, comfortable queer man through the first eight decades of the 20th Century, in a world that does not make that an easy path. All are fiction based on history, intended to give modern readers a view into an earlier time, when being queer could be risky, but also thrilling, as a new queer world emerged, in an avant-garde world capital such as Paris, and also in the American cities, Houston and St. Louis.
In An Old Man and His Memories, after a youth in Paris, and a decade of maturing in New York, followed by another of mellowing in his hometown, Houston, Narrator has rejoined his Great Loves of earlier days, in St. Louis, and has grown old. Now, as he makes his way through one Joycean day, he travels back in memory through a queer lifetime of history and memories.
