Houston Artists Working
A Look at Some Earlier Houston Artists Doing Their Things
Those of us who are dedicated to Earlier Houston Art spend as much time as we can looking at (and looking for) work made by our artists in earlier times. It’s also interesting, and maybe even somewhat illuminating, looking not just at the artists’ work, but also at the artists working. Here are glimpses of a few of them, mostly through photographs, but in a few cases in works they made. It would appear that even they were interested in seeing how they looked when at work.
Mary Ellen Bute, 1906-1983.
McNeill Davidson, 1884-1976.
Ruth Pershing Uhler, 1895-1967.
Grace Spaulding John, 1890-1972.
Belle Heaps, 1888-1983.
Robert Joy, 1910-1993.
Forrest Bess, 1911-1977.
Carroll Harris Simms, 1924-2010.
Nione Carlson, 1910-1999.
James Chillman, Jr., 1891-1972.
Ruth Laird, 1921-2007.
Gertrude Barnstone, 1925-2019.
Anna Belle Peck, 1930-1990.

Houston Artists Working - just a few of the many. There may be a sequel in our future.
The self-portrait of Gertrude Barnstone. Breathtaking. I had never seen it. A beautiful woman, always and all the way through!
